Also, it is very important that all families have the most up to date contact information listed in Infinite Campus. With new visitor protocols, our school staff relies on this information to ensure you are receiving all the up to date school and classroom information. It is also very important that we can reach you quickly if your student is sick or there is an emergency.
The Fifth Grade partnered with Oshkosh North High School Communities Class this year to be proactive in recycling. Mrs. Johnson's class recycled a total of 141.02 lbs of plastic during this school year. It was an amazing effort by the students and families of Read Elementary. Thank you to all the families, teachers and staff that contributed to making our world a better place!
COVID DATA AND SYMPTOMS
In an effort to still track return to school dates for students, we would like you to continue to notify your student's school when they have symptoms, have tested positive or have been a close contact/household contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION & DATES
Early Release - Wednesday, May 11th, 2022 12:30 pickup
NO SCHOOL - May 30th, 2022 for Memorial Day
If your child is going to be absent or late for school for any reason, please contact the office at 920-424-0172. If we are unable to speak to us directly, you may leave a message on the voice mail system to report the absence. Please be specific when calling your child in. If it is an illness we do need to know all the symptoms the child is having as well as the best number to reach you at if we have any further questions. Absences are considered "unexcused" if we do not hear from a parent/guardian by 9 am. Students who are absent from school more than 10 minutes of any part of the day without a proper excuse shall be recorded as unexcused. A student who is absent less than 10 minutes of a day shall be recorded as tardy. The time a student enters or leaves the building will be documented, and the system will calculate the absence accordingly and uniformly across the district. Please keep this in mind as you schedule appointments for your children. It is always best to schedule appointments during non-school hours. Students are expected to be in class from 7:45 to 2:45 daily.
With Wisconsin weather varying so much from day to day please make sure your child(ren) is dressed appropriately for school. Our district's guidelines are as follows:
- Below 55 degrees-coat required
- Between 55-60 degrees-Long sleeves needed
- 61 degrees and over -students choice (shorts are allowed)
- Boots, Snowpants and winter jackets are required to play on the snow.
- Also remember hats, gloves and scarves for extra warmth.
- Recesses will be outdoors unless the temperature is below 10 degrees or the wind chill is below zero.
Packing Extra Pants/Clothes for all students/Clothing Donations Needed
With the weather getting a little warmer, please pack at least an extra pair of pants for your child in case he/she gets them wet at recess, spills on them or has an accident. We are especially requesting this for older students as we do not have any clothing in their sizes. We are asking this so the student can return to the learning environment much sooner than waiting for a parent to bring clothing for them to change into.

Please mark your calendars for the early dismissal dates this year.
School will dismiss at 12:30 and there are NO 4K classes on Early Release Days.
After School Programs
The school day ends at 2:45 and students must be picked up at that time. If you are unable to pick up your student at this time and they are not able to walk home, students must then be enrolled in one of the after care programs that are available. There is the YMCA after school program, which is held in house but run by the YMCA. The other program is the Boys & Girls club. A bus will pick them up from school and transport them to the club. You can call either the YMCA at (920)236-3380 or the Boys & Girls Club at (920)233-1414 to inquire about either of these options.
On early release Wednesdays only, Algoma United Methodist Church next door to Read has an after school program from 12:30-2:45. If you are interested in learning more about this you can call our office at 920-424-0172 and let us know the name of the student you'd like us to send the form home with. or you can call the church at 920-231-2800.
April was National Poetry Month, so we celebrated in a few different ways! First, we had some of our 5th graders from Mrs. Johnson’s class write poems that tied in with last month’s digital citizenship teme, and we posted those in the library. We also had some fun stations around the library (coloring, puzzles, etc) and put up a display on books that feature Poetry! This month’s Digital Citizenship lessons focus on Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech. These are the questions we’ll cover in class in April:
Gr 2: What should you do if someone is mean to you online?
Gr 3: What should you do when someone uses mean or hurtful language on the internet?
Gr 4: How can we be upstanders when we see cyberbullying?
Gr 5: What is cyberbullying and what can you do to stop it?
In May we’ll end the year with a display on Mental Health (to tie in with our SEL theme) and we’ll be thinking about Digital Citizenship within News & Media Literacy. These questions guide our May focus:
Gr 2: How can you give credit for other people’s work?
Gr 3: Why do people alter digital photos and videos?
Gr 4: What rights and responsibilities do you have as a creator?
Gr 5: What are the important parts of an online news article?
Please remember that library books are due back at school no later than May 20th. Returning books on time ensures that the books are counted in our inventory and ready for students next year! On May 26th we’ll have some visitors from the Oshkosh Public Library join us to promote their summer reading program. After that, we will be collecting chromebooks, making sure they’re clean, and checking them back in at the end of the month. If your child brings home their device, please make sure that the chromebook, case and charger are all back at school by the end of May so the devices get checked in and you don’t get charged for missing materials!
